Subject: ebook policy
Importance: High

Dear Sir,

I've recently purchases ebooks from amazon and many issues are unclear
to me regarding the portability of these books.

Since I change equipment quite often it is of concern to me whether I
will loose access to my ebooks sometime in the future. Also, just as
with regular books, I would like to be able to read them not only on one
computer at home, but basically on the notebook, the PC, AND my
computer at work.

The essence of a book for me means that
* I can take it anywhere with me and read it
* store it in my library for literally 100+ years and still be able to
"access" it and read it whenever I like
* even borrow it to my friends ocassionally

Now I understand that for the price of not taking space and being easy
to carry (on a CD) I have to forget about the last point of the above.
But, do I need to fear that 10 years from now, when I have switched my
computers a minimum of 20 times I will not be able to read the ebooks
I've bought?

I will be very thankful for a full explanation of your policy.

Thank you again,

...

Audio formats, quality, internet, free trade / is quality going to extinct? [Apr. 22nd, 2004|10:28 am]
Keywords: AAC, mp3, RIAA, iPod, copy protected CDs, audio quality

Unbelievable, today in the world of 200GB disks and high speed internet take a look at this scenario:

MP3s make it possible to switch music for free, copy it and pirate it on the internet right? This leads to higher popularity of music in general, record companies (RIAA) protect themselves by copy-protecting the CDs. Copy-protected CDs seemingly play OK, but in reality http://ukcdr.org/issues/cd/quick/ at the bottom of the page happens: CD player plays the CD, but the quality is constantly lower.

As CD protection becomes widespread, there is no need to buy physical CDs because they anyway can't be copied, and iTunes Music store offers the same quality anyway, plus 10 CD copies minimum.

So people resign to iTunes with its 128 AAC which is a compressed format. Nice, because by this

we all start using lossy audio compression for all our music

Who profits?

RIAA and music industry

Who loses?

consumers, who now put up with lower audio quality thus never actually being able to put on those HIFI AKG or Sennheiser headphones and enjoying music to its fullest, because it simply won't be availble!! When you buy a CD it'll play shit, when you download AAC it will still play shit, just no way out.

Note: "shit" does not mean AAC is bad. I use it all the time with my iPod and am happy with it, but again, it is a lossy compression format and NOT the real HIFI thing, believe me.

Connecting Nokia 6230 with the Nokia PC Suite [Apr. 21st, 2004|04:10 pm]
What a lucky day, I've become the owner of the long awaited Nokia 6230, which had been announced by Nokia in Fall 2003 and only now (April 2004) hit the stores here in Slovakia, or Austria (a few days later).

I absolutely love the phone, or organizer, or camera, or video camera, ehh, radio?, or heck.. ok, mp3/aac player (!?). Long time user of handheld pcs, this Nokia model competes with these mini computers in terms of functionality when it comes to organizing time and contact management. Stop, no more 'review' type of stuff.

You will run into problems.

PC Suite ver. 5.8 supplied on the CD, or PC Suite ver. 6.0 downloadable from the Nokia site installs fine, but it will not let you access the files in the Gallery, Images, Video, etc. folders of your Nokia 6230, or let you access the files on the MMC card.

1. Install Nokia PC Suite 6.0 (or 5.8), don't connect your phone at this time.

2. Go to Control panel :: Infrared and find the advanced settings tab. Once you're there set the speed of your infrared port to 115200. The port is set to 4000000 or something by default, which Nokia presumably doesn't understand, and their PC Suite is not wise enough to take care of.

3. Now on your Nokia 6230, go into Gallery and format your memory card. You will loose any data that resides on the memory card by doing so. Some people succeeded without reformatting even, try to skip this step if you wish.

4. In the Gallery area on your Nokia 6230 find the memory card and rename it to "MMC". No other name will work. Even the default "Mem. card" which the phone sets after formatting it won't work.

5. Switch your Nokia OFF then back ON.

6. Only now, activate Infrared on your Nokia 6230 and connect it to your PC. It is important to make this connection no earlier than at this time!! If you have already tried it, you must uninstall PC Suite completely and remove all settings which may reside in the 'Documents and Settings folder' as well as in 'Common files'. Otherwise your PC won't find the phone in the Phone Explorer and you won't be able to transfer files!

Well, that's all folks, now you can take photos or videos and send them to your friends by email from your PC. Oh, and remember to send a few rants to Nokia for this awful service. Afterall, the phone cost 500 EUR, and it won't even connect?!

Peace.
